Verse 1

Am I on the outside

Always looking in?

Can you see me standing here

Begging to be let in?

I'm told to keep on knocking

I'm tired of being outside

But if I want my prayers heard

I must knock throughout the night

Verse 2

I must persist until you hear me

Must knock loud enough to wake the dead

Just open the door and let me in

All I want is a piece of bread

But I've gotten the story all wrong

That is not what this scripture means

And I'm trying now to understand

Where it's really meant to lead

So tell me Lord Jesus

What you really meant to say

I'm tired of misunderstanding

Of being pointed the wrong way

Help me see it all clearly

So I can trust you now

And rest my faith in quiet

Where Grace has shown me how

I was never standing in the dark

Didn't have to beg you to belong

I'm your child, loved forevermore

I was inside all along

Verse 3

You said ask and seek and knock

But you didn't say in fear

You're asking me to trust you

And know that you are near

You're not reluctant to listen

Or waiting for me to prove myself

You're showing I can trust you

When I'm asking for your help

So now I know Lord Jesus

What you really meant to say

I don't have to ask till you hear me

You already hear everything I pray

You helped me see it clearly

And I can trust you now

I rest my faith in quiet

Where Grace has shown me how
